Listening to: Beatriz Ferreyra
fundamental voices
of electronic music
Pod heslem „Trigger Change, Regardless“ zvou zvukové umělkyně Sara Pinheiro a Marie Čtveráčková ke komentovanému poslechu významných umělkyň historie elektronické a elektroakustické hudby. Navzdory překážkám a stereotypům ženy tvořily elektroakustickou a elektronickou hudbu a zásadním způsobem ji obohatily a proměnily. Vzhledem k tomu, že v určitých kontextech jejich dílo a myšlenky stále nejsou běžně vnímané jako průkopnické a převratné, budeme si je připomínat během pravidelných komunitních poslechových večerů.

Join sound artists Sara Pinheiro and Marie Čtveráčková for a listening session dedicated to significant sound artists that created the legacy of electronic and electroacoustic music. Despite obstacles and stereotypes, women have been creating electroacoustic and electronic music and fundamentally enriched and transformed it. Given that in certain contexts their work and ideas are still not commonly perceived as significant or pioneering, we will remember them during regular community listening sessions.

The second listening session will be dedicated to the work of Argentinian composer Beatriz Ferreyra who has been living in France since 1960s. She studied under the legendary Nadia Boulanger and later focused on studying electroacoustic music in Italy which led her to Pierre Schaeffer’s Groupe de Recherches Musicales. She became an acclaimed composer (also for ballet and film) as well as teacher and researcher. Studying Beatriz Ferreyra will lead us to explore "undiscovered structure" and what does the acoustic music mean.

The listening evenings are a continuation of the thoughts behind the Trigger project, which was created at the Prague Synth Library with the aim of connecting and strengthening the voices of women in electronic music; and also of the REGARDLESS research project, in which sound artist and researcher Sara Pinheiro focused on finding pioneers of electronic music and sound art whose work has been neglected from historical views precisely due to gender bias. In February, both projects participated in the accompanying program of the Ment festival in Ljubljana in cooperation with the local Atol Project. We now want to offer regular listening sessions focused on the work of prominent women in sound arts with discussions about their creative process and philosophies. We hope that such listening sessions could inspire not only creators, but also anyone interested in music, sound art, groundbreaking creative ideas and approaches, as well as the history of innovation in the field of musical instruments and technologies.

The listening sessions are curated and lead by Sara Pinheiro and Marie Ctverackova

Sara Pinheiro is a sound-maker. For film and video-art, she does sound recording, editing, foley, and mixing. In her solo practice, she makes acousmatic pieces, usually for multichannel performances, radio broadcasts, and installations. Her work crosses practices of sound design for film with concrete and acousmatic music. It blends natural and artificial soundscapes via field recordings, foley practices, and signal processing. She is a member of the live coding group K-o-l-e-k-t-i-v and the noise trio SHLUK. She is also a regular collaborator of Synth Library Prague and Arteacta. She has run workshops, soundwalks and listening sessions since 2012.

Marie Ctverackova aka Mary C is a curator, sound artist, DJ, organiser, and co-founder of the Synth Library Prague community space for sharing, learning and unlearning, discussions, and experiments, not only in the field of electronic music and sound in general. Her projects explore the revolutionary potential of music and music communities, the ways we can navigate and overcome inequalities and stereotypes, and the role of access as well as broader social and economic contexts and their impact on the arts.

SYNTH LIBRARY
